The first weekend of August not only marks Ontario's Civic Holiday but also
Caribana- Toronto's Summer Carnival.
Originated out of Caribbean
traditions, Caribana has evolved to become one of North America's biggest
street festivals. Drawing in hundreds of thousands of tourists from all
around the globe, the average attendance for festivities is approximately
1.3 million people.
Although the massive street parade along Lake Ontario is the culmination of
2-weeks of official Caribana events, much of the draw is for the
world-renowned nightclub parties around the city--- particularly in the
Toronto Entertainment District.
Whether hosting the events or performing, clubs are filled with music
artists, world famous DJs, athletes and celebrities. Spectators are always
equipped with cameras as you can never be sure who you will see (or even
where you might see them!).
Parties range from "fetes" which celebrate
Caribbean traditions with soca (soulful calypso) and reggae while other
parties draw on the star power of the "who' who" in the entertainment
world. Annual celebrity 'regulars' include Kanye West, Jay-Z, P. Diddy,
Rihanna, LeBron James, Shaquille O'Neal, Vivica Fox, Ne-Yo, Lil Wayne,
Drake, Soulja Boy, Snoop Dogg (just to name a few).
Incredibly modified cars and motorcycles line the streets and revelers find
a way to party at all hours of the weekend as the parties seem to never
stop.
